Newport Hospital Newport Ri - Newport - Since 2016, Newport resident Judy Weston has participated in the Heart, Lung and Vascular Rehabilitation, Maintenance and Prevention Program at Newport Hospital to maintain her health. He has emphysema and requires oxygen and medical supervision when exercising.
During the pandemic, while most businesses were closed due to public health concerns, Lifespan Hospital closed rehabilitation clinics to ensure the safety and health of patients and staff.

Newport Hospital Expands Its Emergency Department
While the Newport Hospital program remains closed, programs at Mary's Providence and East Greenwich Hospitals have reopened.
The East Greenwich program is the only one in New England and, according to hospital officials, has been successful in treating ischemic heart disease, and the Providence program is one of only three accredited cardiac care programs in Rhode Island.
Although he doesn't regularly participate in rehab programs, Weston said he feels a difference, and after taking time off due to the pandemic, he began reaching into his retirement fund earlier this year to hire a personal trainer. Do Zoom exercises twice a week.
"It's expensive, but I thought it was worth it and I could do it until it reopened," he said.

The program has helped him get off the lung transplant list since his diagnosis, and he's grateful for that, but since it's closed for good, he says he'll have to go to Mass General for rehab, which will be tough.
In early June, Weston said he received a letter saying the program would continue, then a few weeks later received another letter saying the hospital was closing the program permanently.
He said the service program at Newport Hospital had been a lifeline for him and it was disappointing to see it cut.
"The Zoom staff works with a trainer twice a week and he's great. He's been great at adapting some strength stuff for me, which you have to do for an older person anyway, but it's not like going on a treadmill. There's a physical therapist there, and the nurse says, "we start there in eight minutes, you'll be watched."

During supervised exercise, Weston said nurses and physical therapists check his oxygen, blood pressure and pulse to make sure he's getting the oxygen he needs.
"I'm really upset that Lifespan is going to take what they have at Newport Hospital and give it to Portsmouth, Middletown, Bristol. They don't care about us," he said.
"I really enjoyed being there. I went there as much as I could. I met a lot of nice people there," he says.
When LifeSpan closes the program, it will send information to service program participants in other Rhode Island cities where their patients can join. One program is in Providence and the other is in East Greenwich.

Laranzo and Weston both said it's a burden for them to drive to those places. At 87, Laranzo said he can't drive far, so he now goes to physical therapy on the island, but they don't have the same program as the hospital.
"I'm disabled and it's very difficult to drive with some people on this road today. Actually, I had a truck in front of me recently, luckily I also have a very nice car with power steering, and I hit it. It went off the road and onto the side of the road, so I don't want to go to many places I don't have the experience to go. I can't. It's a shame. Newport Hospital is a private, not-for-profit hospital located in Newport, Rhode Island. Along with Miriam Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital, Newport Hospital is a member of the Lifetime Health System.
Newport Hospital was established in 1873 to improve medical access to Aquidneck Island residents, including the many sailors who traveled to Providence for treatment prior to the particularly perilous winter voyage. Harry Ledyard served as the hospital's first president and founder. At first the hospital was supported solely by private donations, out of which the first hospital, a small cottage, was built. George Peabody Wetmore, a longtime resident of Newport, was instrumental in the construction of the new hospital building in the late 19th century.
In 1903, Alice Vanderbilt, a summer resident of Newport, donated a facility to the hospital in honor of her husband, Cornelius Vanderbilt II, which is now known as the Vanderbilt Rehabilitation Clinic.
Upon his death in 1978, Harold Sterling Vanderbilt's widow, Gertrude Conaway, bequeathed $1 million to Vanderbilt Hospital.
